Habitat & structure

Mangrove shorelines, passes, beaches in summer, dock and bridge lights at night. Historically south of the big bends, but the range keeps creeping north along the Gulf — St. Joseph Bay now holds fish most years.

Where they’re biting

Port St. Joe & Cape San Blas — Northern-edge fishery: creek mouths and lighted docks in high summer.
Apalachicola Bay — Occasional catches in the rivers — a range-expansion story, not a target fishery.

Weather, light & cloud cover

Night and low light around lighted structure is the classic pattern. Cold fronts shut them down hard — below ~60°F they go lethargic and below the mid-50s cold kills are a real risk. Fish warming trends only in the cool months.
