Habitat & structure

Rock: rocky points, riprap, gravel flats, boulder fields and the old river channel. Cleaner and deeper water than largemouth, less love for weeds and wood. On Isabella they hold the rocky points near the dam and the Kern channel edges.

Weather, light & cloud cover

More willing to feed in bright sun than largemouth — clear-water sight hunters that use light to their advantage. That same clear water makes them line- and lure-shy: go lighter and smaller than feels right. Wind-broken surface turns cautious followers into biters.

Ned Rig — 3" Stick Worm on Mushroom Head — Soft plastic · spring / summer / fall / winter. The bass bait that works when nothing else does. Drag and dead-stick it on rock — most bites come while it sits still.
Drop Shot with Finesse Worm — Rig · spring / summer / fall / winter. The bright-sun, deep-water play. Shake the worm in place without moving the weight — bass below can't stand it.
3/8 oz Spinnerbait, Colorado/Willow — Hard bait · spring / summer / fall. The wind-and-dirty-water search bait — flash plus thump bass can find without seeing. Slow-roll it past cover on breeze-blown banks.
Squarebill Crankbait 1.5 — Hard bait · spring / fall. Bang it off rocks and stumps in under 6 ft — the deflection is what triggers the bite. Cover water until they tell you where they live.
Walk-the-Dog Topwater (lake size) — Topwater · spring / summer / fall. Dawn and dusk over points and weed edges. Same rule as the coast: don't set on the blow-up — wait to feel the fish.
Inline Spinner 1/8 oz (Rooster Tail-style) — Hard bait · spring / summer / fall. The stocked-trout searcher. Cast along the bank and retrieve just fast enough to spin the blade — slower than you think.
