Rockfish

Not one fish but a family — vermilion, copper, bocaccio and a dozen more — that turns West Coast hard bottom into the most dependable meat fishing on the coast. Check the seasonal closure dates before every trip; they change.

Sebastes spp. · Also known as: Reds, rockcod, the rail-rattlers. Ideal water temp 50–58°F.

Habitat & structure

Hard bottom, reefs, pinnacles and kelp-adjacent rock from 30 ft to deep water. Structure fish that barely move — find rock on the meter and the fish are there. Shallower species (grass and kelp rockfish) live in the kelp itself; the quality reds hold deeper.

Santa Barbara & Ventura — The island reefs at Anacapa — quality reds and lingcod when open.
Monterey Bay — The kelp-edge rock — the classic Central Coast program.
Santa Monica Bay — Deeper reefs off Palos Verdes when the season allows.
Newport & Dana Point — Local banks in season.

Weather, light & cloud cover

Nearly light-proof — they live deep enough that surface light barely reaches them. Current is the driver: enough to wash bait past the rock, not so much you can't hold bottom. Overcast and fog change nothing down there.

Proven for rockfish

Squid Strips on Dropper Rig — Natural bait · spring / summer / fall / winter. The tough, stay-on-the-hook option for piers and party boats. In Monterey, whole squid soaked at night calls white seabass.
Yo-Yo Iron (6x Jr-style) — Jig · spring / summer / fall. Drop it through the marks to the bottom, then crank it back as fast as the reel allows. The bite is a freight train on the way up — no finesse required.
Live Squid, Fly-Lined or Dropper Loop — Live bait · spring / summer. When the squid nests form, everything eats. Fly-line it shallow for seabass in gray light; dropper-loop it on the bottom over structure for everything else.
Shrimp Fly Dropper Rig — Rig · spring / summer / fall. The Central Coast meat rig. Tip the flies with strip squid, drop to the rock and hold bottom contact. Check the seasonal closure dates before every trip.
Diamond Jig 4–8 oz — Jig · spring / summer / fall. Doubles as the sinker under shrimp flies or fishes alone: bounce it off the rock, or crank it yo-yo style through bait schools for the pelagics.
