Barred Sand Bass

The summer structure fish of the SoCal coast. Sand bass gang up on hard bottom and artificial reefs by the hundreds in the spawn months — when the bite is on, it is the easiest quality fishing on the coast.

Paralabrax nebulifer · Also known as: Sand bass, barries' cousin, grumpies. Ideal water temp 64–72°F.

Habitat & structure

Sand-adjacent structure: artificial reefs, wrecks, hard-bottom patches and breakwater bases in 20–100 ft, plus bay channels in the off-months. Summer spawning aggregations stack over structure flats — meter the school, drop on it, stay on it.

Where they’re biting

LA & Long Beach Harbors — The summer structure spawn — big schools on the harbor reefs.
Santa Monica Bay — Winter structure fish on the artificial reefs.
San Diego & Mission Bay — Bay channels in the cool months, hard bottom outside in summer.

Weather, light & cloud cover

A structure-and-current fish more than a light fish. Overcast keeps the schools looser and higher off the bottom; bright sun tightens them to the shadow of the structure. The tide matters most — a moving tide across the reef turns the school on.

Proven for barred sand bass

3" Single-Tail Grub, Darter Head (CA bays) — Soft plastic · spring / summer / fall / winter. Cast to eelgrass edges on moving tide, slow-roll near bottom. Also takes halibut on the flats.
Yo-Yo Iron (6x Jr-style) — Jig · spring / summer / fall. Drop it through the marks to the bottom, then crank it back as fast as the reel allows. The bite is a freight train on the way up — no finesse required.
Dropshot 4" Straight-Tail Worm — Soft plastic · spring / summer / fall / winter. The winter spotty program. Pitch it to dock shadows and rip-rap, shake it in place, and count the ticks — bay bass eat it when nothing else moves.
Carolina-Rigged 4" Grub — Rig · spring / summer. Egg sinker, bead, swivel, 3 ft of fluoro. Drag it with the drift across the flats — when a halibut thumps it, keep it moving a beat before you swing.
Fly-Lined Sardine — Live bait · summer / fall. No weight, light fluoro, free spool. Let the bait swim away from the boat toward the kelp — when the line speeds up, wind tight and lean back.
