These terms cover the Tides & Tails website and apps. They are written in plain English on purpose — read them, because the first one matters on the water.
Tides & Tails — this website and its apps — exists for recreational and educational purposes only. It is not a navigation tool, and it is not a safety-of-life service. Never use it to navigate a vessel or to decide whether conditions are survivable.
In any emergency, contact emergency services directly: call 911, or hail the US Coast Guard on VHF channel 16.
Tide, weather, water-temperature and warning data on this site comes from third-party sources — NOAA, the National Weather Service and Open-Meteo — and is provided "as is." It may be wrong, delayed, incomplete or unavailable at any time, without notice.
No decision to launch a boat, swim, wade or remain on the water should ever be based on this site. Check official forecasts and use your own judgment about the conditions in front of you.
The app deliberately shows last-known readings when your phone has no signal — that is a convenience for the ramp, not a live feed. Offline readings may be hours old. Timestamps and stale markers are informational only; they are not a guarantee of how fresh or accurate a reading is.
This site may not display every active marine warning, and the warnings it does show may arrive late. NOAA Weather Radio and the US Coast Guard are the authoritative sources for marine warnings — when weather is a question, monitor them, not this site.
Fishing, boating, swimming, wading and other water activities are inherently dangerous. Conditions change fast, water is unforgiving, and no website can make those activities safe. By using this site you acknowledge those dangers and agree that you assume all risk of injury, death or loss of property arising from your activities on or near the water.
By using the site and apps you agree to hold Tides & Tails, its owner and its contributors harmless from any claim arising out of your use of the site or your activities on the water.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our liability to you for any claim is limited, and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages of any kind — including injury, death, lost profits or lost data — even if we have been advised such damages were possible.
You agree to indemnify and defend Tides & Tails, its owner and its contributors against any claims, damages, costs and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your use of the site or apps, your violation of these terms, or your activities on the water.
The charter directory lists independent third-party businesses. We do not vet, employ, endorse or guarantee any operator — including operators with paid or featured listings. Bookings, payments, cancellations and everything else about a trip are strictly between you and the operator. Confirm licensing, insurance and safety equipment with the operator directly.
Marinas, boat ramps, fuel docks and other locations shown on the chart may be inaccurate, closed, seasonal or access-restricted — some sit on private property or military installations. Verify a location before you travel to it, and respect posted access rules.
Comments, catch reports, forum posts and other member content belong to their posters and reflect their views, not ours. We may remove content that breaks the rules, but we do not undertake to monitor everything posted. Do not rely on another member's report as a statement of fact.
Nothing on this site is legal, safety or regulatory advice. Fishing regulations change — seasons, size limits, bag limits and license requirements shown here may be out of date. Verify current rules with your state's fish and wildlife agency before you fish.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alabama, USA. We may update them from time to time — the "last updated" date at the top reflects the current version, and continued use after a change means you accept it.
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age your jurisdiction requires) to use the site. We may suspend or terminate access to the site or any feature at any time.
